01 / Introduction

Behind the data is a mission.

Operations Research and Systems Analysis (ORSA) helps military leaders turn complex information into a clearer basis for decisions. But the value of that work can be difficult to communicate outside the analytical community.

Brian Krow developed and completed a documentary-style production exploring ORSA’s role in support of the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization (JIEDDO). Filmed in Afghanistan and built around expert perspectives, the documentary connected technical analysis with the people and decisions behind the mission.

02 / Objective

Make the complex matter.

Explain what ORSA does, why its analysis matters and how it supports military decision-making—without reducing the substance of the work.

The film needed to connect specialized analytical methods with their operational purpose, establish credibility through expert voices and make the subject accessible to viewers who were not operations research specialists.

03 / Strategy & execution

A documentary built
around the real work.

01

Start with the stakes

The story establishes the operational context of counter-IED work before introducing ORSA as one of the disciplines used to interpret battlefield information.

02

Translate the technical

Historical context and practical examples make the underlying analytical methods easier to understand and show their relevance to operational planning.

03

Let experts explain

Interviews with military officers, intelligence professionals, engineers and analysts provide multiple perspectives on the role of quantitative analysis.

04

Show the human connection

Host-led storytelling, on-location filming and reenactments connect the movement of information to the people interpreting it and the decisions it informs.

On location / Afghanistan

Authenticity was part of the story.

Production at Bagram gave the project a direct visual connection to the environment in which military personnel worked. Original behind-the-scenes photography documents the crew, equipment and interview setups involved in bringing the film together.
